There are many structures across America that are deficient. This creates an economic problem that equates to multiple billions of dollars. Before making the decision to repair or replace the structure, it's important to conduct a comprehensive materials assessment. That is where an experienced and knowledgeable concrete consultant and or concrete petrographer are valuable. Petrography examines and evaluates concrete's optical and microstrutural properties. Petrographic analysis looks at the aggregates, sand, water and cement ratio to determine the strength and integrity of the concrete. Concrete core sampling (see image above) can provide a wealth of information that allows the concrete consultant to share with clients so a knowledgeable decision can be made.
